Sheepscombe School Governing Body
What we do
The purpose of governance is to provide confident, strategic leadership and to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance. The governing body in our school has a legal responsibility which can be summarised by three core strategic functions:
Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure money is well spent
The governors, in partnership with the co-headteachers, provide effective strategic leadership and strive for excellence across the whole spectrum of school life. We are committed to an outstanding experience for all our pupils enabling them to learn effectively and achieve high standards across a relevant and rich curriculum. The day-to-day running of the school is the responsibility of the co- headteachers and staff who create a rewarding, enjoyable and safe learning experience.
Our approach is one of commitment, honesty and openness in the performance of our duties. We pride ourselves in the integrity of our members and our balance of rigorous holding to account with positive support.
We meet every full term as a Full Governing Body (FGB) and have two committees. These are the Strategic Operations Committee (SOC), responsible for financial aspects of the school and the Teaching and Learning Committee (TLC) whose purpose is to focus on the curriculum itself as well as children’s attainment and progress.
Individually, governors may also have specific responsibility for a subject or priority within the school and will attend meetings for that area as needed. These visits are a valuable opportunity for governors to work closely with staff members to gain a deeper understanding of some of the initiatives used in school to improve and sustain progress.
All governors receive a full induction and further training relevant to their committee membership and specific link area. Training is provided by Gloucestershire Governor Services.

Message from the Co-Chairs of Governors: Elisabeth Skinner and Lynsey Willis
We were so impressed by the benefits of a co-headship that we have matched it by appointing co-chairs. We enjoy sharing the workload, talking things through together and playing to our strengths. We are both experienced teachers who live in the village. Lynsey spent much of her career teaching at Field Court in Quedgeley. She is an EYFS/KS1 specialist and focuses as a governor on keeping the children safe. Elisabeth has several lifelong connections with the school including experience as pupil, parent and teacher and has been teaching in higher education since 1989.
In consultation with the staff, the governors have drawn up their strategic priorities for the next three to five years providing the context for the School Development Plan. There are many exciting projects in the pipeline supporting our vision for creating an inspirational setting where all children flourish. Please do contact either of us if there is anything that you wish to discuss.
